It is predicted that Samsung Electronics will purchase large-sized W-OLED from LG Display at the end of the year or early next year as early as possible. There was also an observation that Samsung Display is positively reviewing the QD-OLED phase 2 investment.
Director Park Jin-han of Omdia, a market research company, said this in a Q&A after the announcement of the Korea Display Industry Association (KDIA) business forum held at COEX in Gangnam, Seoul on the 12th.
Director Park predicted, “There is a possibility that Samsung Electronics’ TV business will purchase large white (W)-organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) from LG Display as early as the end of the year or early next year.” He said, “If Samsung Electronics wants to purchase LG Display’s W-OLED panel, they may have started discussions by now.” .
If expectations come true, next year Samsung Electronics’ premium TV lineup will include ‘Neo QLED’ that uses mini light emitting diodes (LEDs) as light sources, TVs that use Samsung Display’s quantum dot (QD)-OLED, and LG Display’s W-OLED. It is expected to consist of applied TVs, etc. Some ‘QLED’ products that apply QD film to general LED light sources are also likely to be included in the premium lineup.
Director Park predicted that “next year, Samsung Electronics will be able to ship around 3 million units of both OLED TVs using Samsung Display’s QD-OLED and LG Display’s W-OLED panels.” This is similar to the number expected by the industry last year for Samsung Electronics’ OLED TV shipments this year.
Previously, in the second half of last year, LG Display reflected in its business plan that it would supply 2 million W-OLED panels to Samsung Electronics this year. However, as Samsung Electronics’ W-OLED TV launch has passed the year, LG Display’s W-OLED panel shipment target for this year has fallen from 10 million units initially to 8 million units recently. If LG Display supplies W-OLED to Samsung Electronics as early as the end of this year, LG Display’s W-OLED shipments next year can be expected to reach 10 million units again.

Director Park also predicted Samsung Display’s QD-OLED phase 2 investment positively. In the current industry, there is an observation that Samsung Display’s QD-OLED phase 2 investment will not be decided until the end of the year or early next year.
He said, “Samsung Display is positively reviewing the QD-OLED phase 2 investment.” If the second-stage investment is additionally executed for the QD-OLED line, which currently has a capacity of 30,000 (30K) per month based on the input of 8.5th generation (2200x2500mm) glass discs, the QD-OLED production capacity can increase to 60,000 per month.
Samsung Electronics mentioned the possibility of additional investment in QD-OLED by Samsung Display and is expected to try to get W-OLED from LG Display at a low price.
If Director Park’s forecast becomes a reality, Samsung Electronics is expected to build the OLED TV lineup, which was passive this year, in earnest next year, and expand the OLED TV lineup for several years by receiving various OLED supplies from Samsung Display and LG Display.
Meanwhile, the fact that Samsung Display’s QD-OLED phase 2 investment is being positively reviewed can be interpreted as meaning that the development of another next-generation display technology, ‘Quantum Dot Nanorod Light Emitting Diode (QNED)’, is being delayed by that much. QNED uses inorganic LED rather than organic OLED.
