Reportedly, Samsung Display plans its first line of 8th generation OLED for IT (laptops and tablets) products. Concurrently, they plan its first mass to produce a “single stack” OLED with 1 layer of the light emitting layer. Now, it is predicted that Samsung Display will have the space to shuffle this line in the future. In order to produce of ‘two-stack tandem’ OLED, that has also two layers of luminous light. The further additional investment in 8th generation OLED with respect to IT is expected to grow. And enter into mass production of two stacks of combinely OLED from the design stage.
Recently, Samsung Display announced the first line of 8.5G (2200x2500mm) organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The same has been produced for IT products and the giant going to invest in the production of Single Stack OLED. The same stack the light emitting into 1 layer. It is also understood that the design concept of the 8.5th generation full cut vertical deposition that Samsung Display has been developing with Ulvac in Japan.
Talking about OLED, the RGB light emitting layer is called a ‘single stack’ when stacked in 1 layer. Whereas the ‘Two Stack Tandem’ is when stacked in 2 layers. Comparatively Two-stack tandems can extend the screen brightness by 2 times. While ‘lifetime’ would be 4 times that of a single stack. Noticeably, the first OLED iPad that Apple is going to launch will be equipped with a two-stack tandem OLED.
When it comes to production capacity then the first OLED line for IT is 10,5000 (15K) sheets per month. It is based on the input of 8th-generation glass discs. It is been estimated that if Samsung Display doesn’t get into mass-producing two-stack OLED. The machinery will be designed with the aim to produce the two-stack tandem OLED in the future.
Focus on Apple’s OLED market
Now the other players have also started investing in the 8G OLED line for IT. While Samsung Display, as well as LG Display, are primarily targeting the Apple market. It prefers a two-stack tandem structure in its IT products.
Mass production is expected to start in the second half of 2024. The first Apples OLED iPad is expected to be on the market by 2024. Notably, it is the 6th generation (1500x1850mm) OLED line of Samsung Display and LG Display. Now, this indicates that there is no need to speed up the preparation of the 8th Gen OLED line in two stack modules.
Notably, LG Display has been applying a two-stack module to automotive OLEDs. Now at the same time, Samsung Display has also hinted that it also going to apply stack to automotive OLEDs at IMID 2022 in Busan.
