The USB Type-C report was first started in back 2021. As the European Union proposes to make USB-C ports a universal charging port for all smartphones and digital devices.
Now a new report from the official European Parliament claims that by the end of 2024, all mobile phones, tablets, and cameras sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port.
The same will apply to the laptops but the timing is fixed from spring 2026. The decision was made on the new law, adopted by plenary on Tuesday with 602 votes in favor, 13 against, and 8 abstentions, is part of a broader EU effort to reduce e-waste and to empower consumers to make more sustainable choices.
The authorities now agreed to mandate USB-C ports on all smartphones, including Apple’s iPhones, that are sold in the EU. This will help to save up to 250 million euros a year on unnecessary charger purchases.
