One of the great news coming in regards to the South Korean tech firm is that the Samsung Electronics System LSI business unit got selected as the second vendor for CIS (CMOS image sensor) for new Hyundai vehicles. It is been found that the company has come up with realistic results after it hired Lee Hae-chang.

As per the industry news, it is revealed that the Samsung Electronics System LSI business unit had been confirmed as a second vendor. This is intended in order to supply CIS for vehicles entering new Hyundai cars in the first half of this year.
An industry insider explained, “The CIS primary vendor for vehicles of Hyundai Motor Company’s new vehicles is Omnivision, and Samsung Electronics System LSI Division has been registered as the secondary vendor.”
CIS plays a role that is very much similar in electronic devices to the transmission of images seen by the human eye to the brain. Earlier, it is often installed on mobile devices such as smartphones. In recent years, the use of the same has been increasing in automobiles as well. While the number of CISs used per car is predicted to grow from 3-4 on average to 6-7 by 2025.
Additionally, the speed at which the positioning of automobile vehicles at level 4 or level 5 increases. Subsequently, the average number of CISs used per Level 3 autonomous vehicle, like Tesla Model 3 or Model Y is nine. Also, the CIS used in vehicles has a higher unit cost compared to other CIS. The average CIS unit price for smartphones comes to around $2. Whereas, the CIS unit price for the vehicle is more than $5 per piece.
CIS Market Growth
However, with high unit costs and an increase in the number of CIS installed in automobiles. The automotive CIS market growing at a fast pace. As per Yol Development, a global market research firm. The global automotive CIS market is expected to nearly double from $4.4 billion in 2018 to $8.7 billion in 2024.
