Reportedly, LG’s investment in OLEDoS, also known as OLED on silicon as a whole, targeting MR marketing is returning. Earlier it seems like LG Display would show its interest in ordering oledos-related equipment. This expectation is for the third quarter but it already reaches towards the end of the fourth. On the other hand, it is predicted that the timing of the market blooming is the reason for postponing the decision.
As per the industry, LG Display will come up with its decision regarding oledos by next month. While in the first half of the year, it is speculated execute the same decision of investment.
OLEDOs is a technology that deposits organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) on a silicon substrate to create ultra-high-resolution displays for augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) devices.
LG Display dedicatedly develops oledos technology, in order to keep commercialization of the same in mind. This intention of LG is far ahead of Samsung Display and Apple. As they also approach LG Display to develop oledos for the pixel density of 3500PPI.
LG Display delayed Oledo’s investment in order to secure resources
On the other hand, it is also predicted that LG Display also delayed Oledo’s investment in order to secure resources and also wait for the market to bloom. The investment that they are about to do is estimated to be about 100 billion ~ 200 billion won. While the silicon substrate for oledos is supposed to be purchased from SK Hynix. Additionally, the timing of the product launch in order to serve potential customers is relatively unclear. Potential customers of LG Display other than Apple including Meta.
Another possible reason is the cumulative operating loss in the third quarter of this year that exceeded 1 trillion won. It is also the factor that puts weight on LG Display’s investment decisions.
Samsung targeting, first to develop RGB Oledos
Talking about Samsung dispaly, which also subsequently started developing oledos technology, the company showing its interest in various forms. Oledos that’s being developed by Sony and LG Display of Japan, dominates the market, and it uses the ‘WOLED+CF’ procedure of placing a color filter on top of a white (W)-OLED.
Samsung Display is also parallelly involved in order to develop ‘WOLED+CF’ for now. Meanwhile, it is forecasted that research will further proceed with the motive of being the first to develop Red (R) Green (G) Cheong (B) Oledos. As it is considered to be a next-generation technology.
