The coming years are all set for foldable devices and as predicted by Samsung the foldable devices are getting ready to spread widely. In the same matter, IDC published a report on future shipments of the upcoming foldable phones.
In 2023, foldable smartphones are expected to ship over 20 million units. In 2022, foldable smartphones made up just over 1% of overall smartphone shipments. In 2023, the firm expects foldables to reach 21.4 million units shipped – 50% growth of over seven million units year over year.
As per the IDC report, foldable phone shipments will reach 48.1 million units in 2027 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27.6% from 2022 to 2027.
Anthony Scarsella, a research manager on mobile phones for IDC, says: “The foldable phone market finished slightly higher than previously forecast as consumers start to embrace the new form factor. A 10% decline in ASP helped the market grow 75.5% in 2022, as foldable devices became more affordable in numerous markets. With new vendors and models joining the race this year, we expect the foldable market to be the one bright spot in 2023 with 50.5% growth, while the total smartphone market contracts 1.1%.”
Meanwhile, Samsung’s strategically in the process to develop a new hinge (droplet) for its fifth-gen foldable. The same is said to be a waterdrop hinge on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Fip 5. Apparently, the same allows the phones to close at a very minor gap when shut to folded. Whereas, this upgradation will make the phone significantly thinner and lighter.
