Nothing CEO, Carl Pei, recently go through with his review of the Samsung S23 Ultra over YouTube. Notably, he did the review over OnePlus 11 and the iPhone 14 Pro as well in the past. With his review, he shared his thoughts on the design, software, and price point. Further, he also made a comparison of Samsung’s most recent flagship and his own company Nothing Phone (1).
For the purposes of his review, though, Carl was in possession of the S23 Ultra for over a month so he could try it out and experience the device fully, admitting that his so-called “Youtube career” has been difficult to balance with his CEO career as he had originally planned to release his review of the Samsung S23 Ultra at the time of the embargo, just like the other influencers had. However, his busy schedule got in the way and thus why it is just now being released.
With respect to Galaxy S23 Ultra, Carl admitted that the design is very polished and a lot like a “Straight-A Student” with pure science, but no art.
There’s much to share with respect to his review, so without wasting much time, let’s dive directly into his review:
Difference between the S23 and S22 Ultra
On design language, as compared to the predecessor S22 Ultra, he said- it is very hard to tell the difference apart from the reduced curvature and a little larger bezel around the cameras of the device.
As per him, the design is very much iterative. Although, he further admitted that this is not precisely essential with respect to the average consumer’s point of view, and that’s the exact segment, for whom Samsung designed the device for.
On Camera, he has their thoughts that the increase in megapixels is irrelevant, despite giving more focus to the physical size and its sensor is essential. He states “The larger the sensor, the more light can get in and the better the photo is going to be.”
View on moon photos
Moving ahead, Carl also addresses that altercation with regard to 100x Space Zoom. That combines optical zoom and computational processing and produces ultra-sharp images of the moon, that apparently called fake by many. He appropriately stated that every smartphone camera uses computational photography somehow. While he further added that this war of words is not new and comes to light from time to time.
Samsung software and pre-installed apps
As per him, the UI is outdated to some extent but parallelly he finds the amount of pre-installed apps to be inferior on a Samsung device nowadays. He counted and got up to 35 while comparing to pre-installed on the Nothing Phone which is three or four. Also, for the same balmed this Samsung being a big giant have a smaller team.
Importance of S-Pen
Contrary to the S Pen, he finds it helpful in certain cases, where one needs to instantly sign a digital receipt or a contact. While he is not essentially a big fan of using it. Preferably, he finds more importance to the old pen and paper in order to write down thoughts when needed.
Relevance to the Nothing brand
Samsung’s market already reached to masses, Carl said that Nothing is at the stage where it is segmenting a small subset of users that are either interested in technology or in design.
This “tribe” will become further defined as Nothing matures and the products are made as perfect as possible.
At the same time. Carl politely admitted that Samsung is a company to be respected since they have been in the game for a long time. Also, much leading in building the Android ecosystem along with Google. Stating that “if it wasn’t for Samsung, we wouldn’t be here.”
