Samsung is getting ready to enter in the smart ring market. Earlier, the company filed a trademark application for the name ‘Galaxy Ring‘ with the Korean Intellectual Property Office in February.

Now, according to the latest information, the Samsung Galaxy Ring is expected to get measuring health indicators and sleep status by installing a photoplethysmography sensor (PPG) and an electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor. It is similar to the Galaxy Watch, but since the entire inner surface of the ring wraps around the finger, it is expected to be able to measure health information more closely.

Samsung will bring a huge change in the smart ring market as an official familiar with Samsung’s situation said, “Samsung already has the technology for the Galaxy Ring and is preparing well, but I know that it is worried about its effectiveness due to overlapping positions with the watch.”

Of course, the smart ring market is not a new area at all. Last year, Gucci launched a smart ring in collaboration with Finnish healthcare company Oura. It only supports basic health management functions such as activity level, sleep pattern, body temperature, and heart rate, but the price is slightly expensive at $950 (about 1.25 million won) because of the luxury premium.

Apple and Samsung are expected to differentiate themselves from previously released Smart Rings by strengthening connectivity between their devices. For your information, IDC stated that this year the shipments of wearable devices are expected to increase by 6.3% year-on-year to 523.2 million units. IDC also predicted that wearables shipments are expected to grow at an average annual rate of 5.4% over the next five years, reaching 644.5 million units by 2027.
