Samsung Display applied LTPO TFT instead of LTPS TFT

Reportedly, Samsung Display has now applied for LTPO TFT instead of LTPS TFT. Yes, you read that right, the company applies low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin film transistor (TFT) to the organic light emitting diode (OLED) for Galaxy S22 Plus and S23 Plus (6.55-inch Galaxy S series).

Accoridng to the latest report from The Elec, the price increases up to $8 and the panel price increases to $10. As per the DSCC, a market research company report, last year’s model Galaxy S22 Plus and this year’s model Galaxy S23 Plus are actually applying low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFT. Both models have the same OLED specifications.

DSCC indicates that the Galaxy S22 Plus OLED cost, which was in the mid $40 range in the first quarter of last year, fell to $40 in the fourth quarter of last year, and then rose to the mid-$40 level again in the first quarter of this year.

In the second quarter of this year, the OLED cost for the Galaxy S23 Plus fell to the mid $30 again, and it was estimated to form the mid-$30s in the second half. From the first quarter of last year to the fourth quarter of this year, the price of the panel has been continuously declining, so it is estimated that Samsung Display’s profitability from mass production of OLED for the Galaxy S23 Plus in the first quarter of this year has declined.

As compared to the LTPS TFT, the price of LTPO TFT rises because the oxide process is increased. LTPO TFT is a technology applied to support a variable refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz and reduce power consumption.
