Samsung Electronics has officially succeeded in the ‘driver-free driving’ test from Suwon, Gyeonggi-do to Gangneung, Gangwon-do with its self-developed autonomous driving algorithm (software). It reaches ‘Level 4’ autonomous driving, in which the driver does not intervene except in emergency situations such as bad weather.
According to the report from the SAIT (Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology), a leading research and development (R&D) organization of Samsung Electronics, succeeded in a driving test without driver intervention in a 200 km section from Suwon to Gangneung in October of last year.
The driving test was conducted by testing software and algorithms SAIT is researching by putting self-driving devices from other companies, such as LIDAR, on specific models of finished vehicles such as Hyundai and BMW.
This is an achievement achieved five years after Samsung Electronics received permission to temporarily operate self-driving cars from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in 2017.
It is said that SAIT has internally developed a level 4 level autonomous driving technology to respond to level 2 and level 3 solutions that are in the commercialization stage.
An official in the industry said, “Advanced research at the Institute of Advanced Technology is conducted over a long period of more than 5 years to achieve challenging goals, and autonomous driving technology is one of them.” We will be able to create synergy.”
