Samsung Display has officially confirmed that it is getting ready for a ‘zero bezel’ concept product required to implement a full screen on the front of a smartphone. Jung Yong-wook, managing director of Samsung Display, introduced bar-type mobile product design at the K-Display Business Forum presentation held at COEX in Gangnam, Seoul on the 17th and said, “(Consumers) can use the screen as a whole by minimizing (front) camera exposure. “Samsung Display is preparing an under-panel camera (UPC) and a zero-bezel concept product that completely removes the border itself,” he said.
The company has demonstrated the image of Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy and Apple iPhone designs evolving from notch to hole to zero beze. The structure needs to be optimized. In order to realize zero bezel, 3D bonding and edge brightness control were presented as technical tasks.
“In the past, feature phones were designed in the form of bars at first, but after the performance was met, flip and slider products came out,” said Chung. It has sold up to 50 million units,” he said. “As the feature phone moved to the smartphone, it was released as a bar-type product again, and currently, 1.2 billion units of smartphones are sold annually,” and “This year, sales of foldable phones are expected to reach 20 million units.”
“The meaning of these numbers is that there is definitely consumer demand for foldable products,” said Chung. “With the introduction of OLED, mobile products will evolve into various forms such as foldable and slideable,” he said. “To fold and close the product, durability must be strengthened, and since more than two screens are used and the area increases, the importance of power consumption also increases.” said. He added, “Slidable needs to be discussed with the set company, but I think it will be released as a product in 2-3 years.”
