The South Korean tech giant Samsung announced that the company is participating in an open-source software (SW) development project to build and spread an advanced semiconductor ecosystem.
The company is now a member of the operating board of directors for ‘RISE (RISC-V Software Ecosystem, Rise)’, an open-source software development project launched by the Linux Foundation, an open-source non-profit organization.
This project will develop new software using ‘RISC-V (Risk Five)’, an open source (open) semiconductor design asset (IP, Intellectual Property). Other companies like global IT and semiconductor companies such as Google, Intel, Nvidia, and Qualcomm are also participating.
These companies plan to develop software based on RISC-V. For your information, the RISC-V is now specifically owned by a single company so more companies can use it to design new software.
“In order for RISC-V to be commercialized, it is important to secure software that has performance, security, reliability, and compatibility,” said Amber Huffman, a senior researcher at Google and the chairman of the RISE project. We will expand the ‘RISC-V ecosystem’ by securing it.”
“We will participate in the RISE project and collaborate with other companies to build a sustainable RISC-V-based open source software ecosystem,” said Park Soo-hong, head of the Open Source Group at Samsung Research and a member of the Linux Foundation board of directors.
